Our Honest Product review
- An Aquatic Goldmine: The Mud Eel is prized not only for its excellent taste but for its exceptional nutritional profile—particularly its extremely high calcium content (making it a strong food for bone health) and Omega-3 content.
- Incredible Hardiness: Its specialized dual-respiratory system (gills and air sacs) allows it to be transported live over long distances without water, commanding a premium price and providing a significant economic advantage over other fish.
- Sustainability and Conservation: Due to overfishing and habitat destruction, the species is now listed as Vulnerable (VU) in many areas. While export demand is very high, sustainable farming and conservation efforts are crucial for its long-term market viability.
- Consumer Note: Its snake-like appearance and slimy skin may require specific preparation techniques and can be a hurdle for consumers unfamiliar with eel consumption.
Usage
- Culinary Delicacy: Consumed as a highly relished food fish, often prepared in curries, grilling, boiling, or frying.
- Medicinal / Therapeutic: Traditionally used by tribal and traditional healers to treat anaemia (believed to increase hemoglobin), weakness, diabetes, asthma, and haemorrhoids (piles). The dried head or blood is used in various medicinal preparations.
- Aquaculture and Export: A highly demanded and priced export commodity (especially to China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan). Commercial culture is being developed to meet increasing demand and relieve pressure on wild stocks.
- Pest Control: Can be integrated into rice field aquaculture where it acts as a predator against common agricultural pests like golden snails.
